Most couples imagine that getting legally married in the UAE means residency requirements, piles of paperwork, witnesses, embassy visits and several weeks of waiting.

Abu Dhabi has made that picture surprisingly outdated.

For eligible foreign couples, getting married in Abu Dhabi can be far simpler than expected. Tourists can apply, witnesses are not required, and an urgent civil marriage service can process eligible applications within one working day.

The catch? Abu Dhabi can make the court process simple, but it cannot magically fix the wrong documents. That is where most couples need to pay attention.

Getting Married in Abu Dhabi: Can Foreign Couples Really Do It?

Yes, and this is exactly why Abu Dhabi has become so interesting for international couples.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department offers a civil marriage system mainly for non-UAE nationals. Eligible couples generally need to be at least 18, freely consent to the marriage, not already be married to someone else and not be related within prohibited degrees.

Different nationalities are not, by themselves, a problem.

So imagine one partner lives in Dubai and the other is visiting from London. Or perhaps one is British and the other Indian. They do not need to have matching passports, matching residency statuses or matching life stories before they can consider Abu Dhabi.

What matters is whether the couple meets the legal conditions and has the right paperwork.

Do You Need UAE Residency?

No, and this is probably the most useful fact for couples researching their options.

Tourists can apply for Abu Dhabi civil marriage even when neither partner is a UAE resident. The application can also be started electronically from outside the country.

Non-resident couples still need to travel to Abu Dhabi for their ceremony, but they do not need to move to the UAE first just to qualify.

In practical terms, that makes Abu Dhabi possible for couples who want to fly in, complete their legal marriage and return home without turning the wedding into a relocation project.

What Documents Do You Actually Need?

This is where internet advice often makes a simple process look unnecessarily dramatic.

For Abu Dhabi civil marriage, the official court guidance currently lists:

  • Passport copies for both partners
  • Emirates ID copies where applicable
  • Proof of divorce if either partner was previously married and divorced
  • A former spouse’s death certificate where applicable

For a first-time marriage with straightforward documents, that can be refreshingly manageable.

For previously married couples, however, this is the point where “simple” can become less simple. An old divorce document with unclear wording, inconsistent names or missing information can create more trouble than the actual wedding application.

If you have been married before, our guide to remarriage in Abu Dhabi explains some of the additional issues worth checking.

How Fast Can You Actually Get Married?

Potentially very fast.

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department currently offers two civil marriage service levels:

  • Standard service: AED 300, with processing of up to 10 working days.
  • Urgent service: AED 2,500, with processing within one working day.

The urgent option also allows couples to request a preferred ceremony date and time, subject to court availability.

And the ceremony itself? Usually much shorter than the time couples spend deciding what to wear.

The court describes civil ceremonies as taking around 15 minutes.

And Yes, You Can Forget the Witness Hunt

Abu Dhabi civil marriage does not require witnesses.

You can still invite parents, friends or the cousin who has already booked a flight. They are simply not required to make the marriage legal.

Couples may also exchange rings and personal vows if they want a more personal ceremony. These are optional, not legal requirements.

What Actually Delays Couples?

Usually not the court.

The real problems often appear when couples make assumptions before checking their situation.

  • Booking flights before the application is approved
  • Discovering an old divorce document is incomplete
  • Having different spellings of a name across documents
  • Following paperwork advice meant for another country or marriage system
  • Assuming “urgent marriage” means document requirements disappear

One-day processing is useful. One-day preparation is usually not.

If something in your history or documents is unusual, the smartest move is to identify it before the wedding date starts controlling every decision.

Is Abu Dhabi the Right Option for You?

If you are a foreign couple looking for a civil ceremony, Abu Dhabi offers something unusually valuable: a clear legal route that is open to eligible residents and tourists, without mandatory witnesses and with an urgent option when time matters.

But the best question is not simply, “Can we get married in Abu Dhabi?”

Ask instead:

“Can we get married in Abu Dhabi smoothly with the documents and circumstances we already have?”

That question can save you a rushed flight, a postponed ceremony and a very uncomfortable conversation with relatives who already think the wedding date is confirmed.

Check First, Celebrate Second

Getting married in Abu Dhabi can genuinely be simpler than many foreign couples expect. The court process is not usually the complicated part. Knowing whether your own documents are ready is.
